All about Addition

Addition or add is a common term that almost all students are aware of. Once the kid develops an understanding of numbers, they are introduced to the concept of addition of numbers. Learning addition of numbers helps the kids to understand the concept of place value too. And if the kids are able to enjoy learning the concept of addition, then they excel at it. Now, as parents, if you are wondering how to introduce addition concepts to your child’s routine, we’ll talk about it.

How to Introduce Addition

There are different ways in which addition can be introduced in a child’s curriculum. You have to introduce this chapter in a way that the children find it fun to do; otherwise, they might develop a strong dislike and end up not practising it. BYJU’S offers various single digit addition worksheet that you can provide to your child for practice. But before giving them worksheets to practise, let’s have a look at how, as parents, you can introduce addition to your child’s curriculum.

  • Use Objects – Kids learn faster when they see things. So, the best way to introduce these kinds of concepts is by explaining them, using objects. You can use blocks to introduce the concept of addition. Start by taking a small number of blocks, say 7. Now divide them into groups of 4 blocks and 3 blocks. Now, ask your kid to count the total number of blocks if you add 4 with 3 or vice versa. Explain to them that addition means adding or giving more to a number or something similar. Once they start seeing how addition works through these activities, it will become easy for them to solve the worksheets.
  • Use Abacus – An abacus is an excellent way of learning mathematical concepts like addition and subtraction. If you want your ward to learn about addition, then an abacus can make their learning easy. For example, to show the sum of (3 + 3), this could be easily demonstrated in the abacus. First, bring 3 beads on the rod and then add another 3 beads to it; the 6 beads will be the answer to the question. Use a few more examples of addition until your child understands how to do it. Once he gets hold of the concept, it will become easy for him to do the addition by himself. You can give your kid to use the abacus while he is solving addition worksheets.
  • Use of Fingers – This is the most basic way to teach your child about addition. This method is generally used for kindergarten or preschool kids. For instance, ask them to hold out three fingers and then pull more fingers. Now ask the kid to count the total number of fingers they are holding out. This will help them to develop a basic understanding of addition. The only disadvantage of this method is one cannot do the addition of numbers whose sum is more than 10.
  • Worksheets – Once your kid is able to grasp the concept of counting and addition, you can provide them with a double-digit addition worksheet for practice. These worksheets will help to deal with numbers whose additional value is more than 10. After all, the more they practise, the better they get with the concepts.

Benefits of Addition

If a child develops a basic understanding of addition, it will help them in many ways.

  • Paying bills – One of the essential benefits of addition is that it helps in adding up amounts and paying the right amount. Anyone who knows how to add can quickly sum up even large amounts of money, without using a calculator.
  • Strengthen concepts – Addition is the basic concept that allows the kids to learn and grasp other mathematical concepts as they grow up. Be it word problems or solving equations, the idea of addition will be required.

BYJU’S offers several addition worksheets that can be easily practised by kids who are in preschool or kindergarten classes.
